Maskavas Forštate is a neighborhood in Riga, on the eastern side at upper side of the river the big market Central Tirgus, passes the Stalin building landmark and ends some kilometers north east in the suburbs.

The fist time I entered this part of town, I felt like going back a 100 years in time, like in a time capsule. This was 7 years ago.

Today gentrification has reached Riga, and Central Tirgus is in the middle of Perestroika; new times. The sad part is that every city looks the same, it must be strange to the locals too. Where are all the people who used to sit here, drinking theri 70 cent coffee, seeing friends.

Today? Fast food vendors, tourists, the russian language heard, but not so dominant any longer.

The neighbourhood is almost the same though. A tram running through the quiet main street Maskavas iela. At Masa Kalna some goes off. Heading for the cematory, or the cermon in the Russian cathedral. Or just hanging out in the park
